The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne

My illustrations were used throughout the New Royal Children′s Hospital as wayfinding and interior graphics.
I worked for a year full time on this project with Bates Smart Architects and Buro North and an amazing team of people.
Environmental themes and related characters were used to describe destinations and functions in the hospital.
Moving through the different floors of the hospital adults and children go on a journey from ′underground′ at the lower ground levels through to ′sky′ on the top floor.
Specific areas within each level are described in relation to an appropriate animal, for example, ′Koala Ward′ exists on the ′Tree Tops′ level.
I was asked to create a series of scenes for each of the eight levels of the hospital depicting the Victorian landscape, flora and fauna.Drawings needed to be illustrative,semi-abstract and playful with a sense of natural light and the texture of the Australian landscape. Each element was drawn separately to enable various applications and compositions. The illustrations were scanned as high-resolution artwork, suitable for reproduction on various media, including large format printing.
Buro North worked with my illustrations to create highly distinctive wayfinding graphics and over 5,000 signs, wall panels and essential landmarks for the large hospital site.
With over 10,000 visitors every day from many different cultures and speaking various languages, the primary goal was to use illustration rather than words to help people move freely through the hospital and also to make the environment a more enjoyable experience for the sick children, their families and the staff.

″ The new wayfinding signage design has resulted
in an estimated 45% reduction in journey times″

″Infusing nature with interior design has created an
enriched and restorative environment for children, families and staff.″
